Lucio Daza

Director of Technical Marketing

Lucio is the Director of Technical Marketing at Dremio. He loves the thrill of the chase when searching for answers in the messiest of data.

Online software training can be very beneficial to your company if delivered effectively. It gives students the flexibility to learn about a software product on their own time and at their own pace, and they can practice what they are learning with more interactive content and modules.

Online software training is not only for teaching students or employees about your product. It’s also a way to educate potential customers about your product, improve the sales cycle, minimize how many other internal resources are being used, and train your new customers to reduce onboarding time.

So, how do you get started?

In this webinar, we invited Lucio Daza, Director of Technical Marketing at Dremio to share some of his online training best practices, and his do’s and don’ts and how to measure training success.

He draws on his experience in creating Dremio University, which helps learners get insight from data faster, as well as reduce software deployment time, enhance the learning experience, and overcome implementation challenges. Here are some of the key takeaways:

The Do’s and Don’ts of Online Software Training

Getting Started

Whether it’s looking for a vendor or figuring out what you are trying to achieve with your software training program, here are some things you should focus on:

  • Make a list of requirements for your online training software, and avoid going with the first vendor you demo
  • Do not start developing content without a goal mind. Make sure there is a flow with what you are trying to teach.
  • Avoid picking a platform that makes your students feel like they are purchasing something rather than receiving an academic/learning experience.

Course Development

When you’ve identified which vendor you are going with after some due diligence and you’ve set up clear goals for the program, how do you make the course materials great? Lucio says:

  • Make content informative and educational; avoid a sales pitch course
  • Do not assume that everyone learns the same way; some people will want to learn through text, others through video. Make the course content diverse.
  • Keep modules short and sweet.
  • Make sure to have beta-testers to look for errors and improvements

Performance and Course Improvements

  • Gather customer feedback all the time
  • Capture data anytime possible
  • Create assessments to gauge performance

Best Practices

Lucio also shared some of his best-kept secrets on making Dremio University a success. Here are some easy wins and best practices people can do when setting up their online training:

  1. Surveys: use them to gather feedback and hear from your learners
  2. Certificates: Reward learners for completing your course with a beautiful, designed certificate customized to your brand that they can proudly share their accomplishment on LinkedIn and other social media channels
  3. Announcements: Consistently communicate with your students to let them know about new courses, new modules, updates and more.
  4. Incentivize students: Help spread the word by incentivizing students with swag if they share on social media.
  5. Accessibility: Make courses easy to find, and make it free. You will see more sign-ups and registrations are the users are able to access the course for free.

Measuring Success

Assessments, completions, and surveys are among some of the tools you can use to measure success. They give you insight on how your course is progressing and especially how to improve it.

In the webinar, Lucio shared some of the ways he measures success and also shared some insightful ways to determine the ROI of Dremio U:
