AppsemblerX: the first 3rd party Open edX mobile app!

Open edX is known as the open source platform for offering your own online courses, complete with videos, handouts, problem sets, grading, certificates and more.  It’s everything you need to run your own internal learning site or offer MOOCs (massive open online courses).

They have also open sourced companion mobile apps for iOS and Android. Here at Appsembler we are proud to announce the first iOS app in the App Store based on Open edX code (aside from the great edX mobile app, of course): AppsemblerX.

Open edX iOS apps are great for letting your users (employees or students) learn on the go.  Users enroll for courses on your edX website (though course enrollment is coming soon to mobile).  Then from the mobile app they can log in and see any courses they are enrolled in.  They can watch videos instantly by streaming, or download them to watch when there’s no connectivity — if they get interrupted, the app will remember where they are in every video.  Users can also see updates about the course and read handouts.

AppsemblerX currently has one course available, with plans to have more in the future.  Our course, Creating Your First Course in Open edX, walks you through the process of creating courses using edX Studio.  You’ll start by creating the course title and summary page, and proceed to create videos, handouts, and discussion forums. Then we’ll show you how to create problem sets and grade your students.  By the end, you should be able to quickly create a complete course in Open edX.

AppsemblerX is designed for mobile: all course units have video components that range from 2-4 minutes.  Whether you already have an Open edX instance for your organization or are investigating Open edX, this app will help you understand how easy it is to create a fully-featured course.

The app is free and we’d love to hear your feedback.  We even have a Submit Feedback button right in the app.  You will need to register at Appsembler Academy and enroll for the course here.  Then you can log in to the mobile app and see your course.

As the mobile app developer here at Appsembler, I’m excited to start working on custom branded mobile Open edX apps for our customers.  If you would like to be able to offer your own mobile learning app, fill out our mobile app interest form and we’ll get back to you with more details.
